Karachi to Hawkes Bay Beach: Distance, Route, Entry Fee & Tips (2025)

Everything you need to know about visiting Hawkes Bay from Karachi — distance, driving route, entry fees, beach hut prices, activities, and the best time to go.

Karachi to Hawkes Bay Beach: Distance, Route, Entry Fee & Tips (2025)

Hawkes Bay is the beach most Karachiites actually go to. Not the most photographed, not the most exclusive — but the most visited, most loved, and most accessible stretch of coast in the city's reach. If you are planning your first beach day from Karachi, this is where to start. Here is everything you need to know before you go.

Distance and Journey Time

Hawkes Bay sits approximately 25 kilometres from Karachi city centre — a deceptively short distance that can take anywhere from 40 minutes to 90 minutes depending on Karachi's traffic conditions. On a weekend morning departure (before 8am), you can reach the beach in under 45 minutes. Leave after 9am on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and budget 75–90 minutes. The beach road itself is free of the city's usual congestion once you clear the main Karachi exits, so the journey improves significantly once you are past Hub River Road.

Route: How to Get There

The standard route from central Karachi follows this sequence:

  • From Karachi Centre / Saddar: Head west on M.A. Jinnah Road → Lyari Expressway exit → Hub River Road (M-10) → Hawkes Bay Road (N-10). Total: approximately 25km.
  • From DHA / Clifton: Shahrah-e-Faisal → Super Highway interchange → Hub River Road → Hawkes Bay Road. Adds about 5km but avoids inner-city traffic.
  • From Gulshan / North Karachi: Northern Bypass → Super Highway → Hub River Road → Hawkes Bay Road. Cleanest route from the north.

Google Maps and Careem both navigate Hawkes Bay correctly. Set your destination as "Hawkes Bay Beach Karachi" and follow N-10 signs once you hit the coastal road. There is no toll on this route.

Entry Fees (2025)

Hawkes Bay has a nominal entry charge at the main checkpoint on Hawkes Bay Road:

  • Private vehicle (car): PKR 100–200 per vehicle (varies by day — weekends are higher end)
  • Motorcycle: PKR 50–100
  • Bus / Coaster (public): PKR 200–300 per vehicle

The fee is collected by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation staff at the checkpoint. It is cash only — have small notes ready. The fee covers general beach access; private beach huts and special sections have their own charges.

Beach Sections Breakdown

Public Section

The main public beach runs for roughly 3 kilometres and is open to all. Parking in the public area costs an additional PKR 50 collected by informal attendants. This section is excellent for families — it is broad, the surf is manageable, and there is constant life on the beach. On public holidays it becomes extremely crowded (thousands of visitors). Weekday visits offer a dramatically more relaxed experience.

Private Beach Huts

Dozens of private huts line the Hawkes Bay beach, bookable for the day or overnight. Prices:

  • Basic hut (4–6 people, shade + plastic chairs): PKR 500–800/day
  • Standard hut (includes basic kitchen, seating, partial enclosure): PKR 800–1,200/day
  • Premium hut (larger, better fixtures, some with outdoor BBQ setup): PKR 1,200–1,500/day

Book via direct phone call — most hut owners have WhatsApp numbers posted at the beach checkpoint. Weekends and public holidays fill up by Friday evening; book at least two days in advance for Sundays and Eid.

Camping Section

Hawkes Bay permits overnight camping in a designated area adjacent to the main beach. Cost is approximately PKR 300–500 per person for overnight stays, which covers basic facilities access. Bring your own tent, sleeping gear, food, and water — there is no camping equipment rental on-site. The camping section is most popular October through February. Campfires are permitted in designated spots.

Activities and Costs

  • Horse riding along the beach: PKR 300–500 for approximately 15 minutes. Negotiate before you mount — the initial quote is usually PKR 700–800.
  • Camel rides: PKR 200–400 for a short circuit. Good for children. Again, negotiate — quoted prices are inflated for visitors.
  • Jet ski: PKR 1,500–2,500 for 15 minutes, depending on the operator and the jet ski quality. Busy Sundays mean queues; arrive early for the best machines.
  • Beach cricket: Free — bring your own bat and ball, or join an ongoing game (Karachiites are always welcoming of extra players).
  • Banana boat (available seasonally): PKR 400–600 per person.

Best Time to Visit Hawkes Bay

The optimal window is October through March, when Karachi's weather is at its best — temperatures of 22–30°C, low humidity, clear skies, and a sea that is neither dangerously rough nor unpleasantly warm. The golden months are November and December when the weather is cool, the water is clean, and the beach is busy but not overwhelming.

A special note: September through October, the beaches near Hawkes Bay (particularly Sandspit, a 10-minute drive east) become active sea turtle nesting sites. Female green sea turtles come ashore at night to lay eggs — the WWF Pakistan runs a conservation programme and permits guided night visits. If you are visiting in this window, an evening at Sandspit is one of Karachi's most extraordinary wildlife experiences.

Avoid May through August: extreme heat (38–42°C), high humidity, and the risk of monsoon-season rough seas make beach visits uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+): Karachi's coastal sun is intense even in winter. Overpriced and limited quality on the beach — bring your own.
  • Hat and sunglasses: Essential. No shade on the public beach sections.
  • Cash only: There are no ATMs at Hawkes Bay. Bring enough for entry, food, activities, and a buffer.
  • Water (at least 2 litres per person): Beach vendors sell water at PKR 100–150 per bottle (city price: PKR 30–50). Bring your own from Karachi.
  • Snacks and food: Similarly overpriced on the beach. Pack a cooler if possible.
  • Change of clothes and a towel: The beach bathroom facilities charge PKR 20 for use and are basic.

Food on the Beach

If you do not bring your own food, the beach stalls offer:

  • BBQ corn (bhutta): PKR 80–120, freshly grilled with butter and chaat masala. Worth every rupee.
  • Chai: PKR 50–80 per cup. Beach chai has a particular ritual quality — the salt air, the sound of waves, a hot cup in hand.
  • Biryani / rice dishes: PKR 300–500. Quality varies. Stick to stalls that are busy — turnover means fresher food.
  • Cold drinks and water: PKR 80–150. Buy water in Karachi city instead.

Facilities

Basic bathroom facilities are available at the beach and in private hut areas. Charge: PKR 20 per use. Do not expect more than the basics — clean enough, but rudimentary. Private huts have better bathroom facilities included in their rental fee. There is no medical station on the beach; for any serious emergency, the nearest hospital is approximately 35–40 minutes away in Karachi city.

Safety Notes

  • No swimming when flags are red — the currents at Hawkes Bay can be powerful during rough weather. Listen to the informal warnings from locals and hut operators who know the sea conditions.
  • No valuables on display — leave expensive items locked in the car. Petty theft, while not rampant, does occur on busy beach days.
  • Children near the water — supervise at all times. The beach shelves quickly and the surf, while generally manageable, is unpredictable.
  • Sun exposure — the beach reflection intensifies UV exposure significantly. Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes.

Return Route Options

The fastest return is the same N-10 route back to Karachi. For variety, an alternative return adds approximately 20 minutes but passes through Manghopir — an ancient neighbourhood famous for its crocodile shrine (Magar Pir), where sacred crocodiles are fed by devotees. The detour adds a cultural dimension to an otherwise beach-focused day and gives you a genuinely different view of Karachi's diversity. Take Manghopir Road from Hub River Road and follow signs back to the city.
