Karachi to Hawkes Bay: Distance, Route, Beach Tips & Entry Fee 2025

Hawkes Bay is Karachi's most accessible proper beach — wide, sandy, with manageable surf, and close enough to the city that a day trip requires no overnight planning. Yet a surprising number of Karachiites have never actually been, or went once years ago and did not know what they were doing. This guide covers everything: exact distances, the route, what it costs, and how to make the most of the visit.

Distance from Different Parts of Karachi

The distance to Hawkes Bay varies significantly depending on where you are starting from. Here are accurate current estimates:

  • From DHA Phase 4/5/6: Approximately 28–32 km via Korangi Creek Road and Hawksbay Road. Driving time: 40–55 minutes in normal traffic.
  • From Clifton / Sea View: Approximately 26–30 km. Route via Korangi Causeway or through SITE. Driving time: 45–60 minutes.
  • From Gulshan-e-Iqbal / Nazimabad: Approximately 38–44 km. Route via Lyari Expressway or Hub River Road. Driving time: 55–75 minutes.
  • From Saddar / Burns Road: Approximately 32–36 km via M.A. Jinnah Road westward. Driving time: 50–70 minutes.
  • From North Karachi / Surjani Town: Approximately 50–58 km. Allow 80–100 minutes minimum.

Note: All times assume light-to-moderate traffic. On Sunday mornings from 7–9am, the road to Hawkes Bay is clear. On Sunday afternoons 4–7pm, expect 30–40 minutes extra on the return.

The Route: Step by Step

The main route from central and southern Karachi follows Hub River Road westward from the city boundary. From DHA, the fastest approach is to reach Korangi Causeway and then connect to the coastal road. From Saddar and Gulshan, take the Lyari Expressway west to its terminus and then follow Hub River Road toward the beach.

The final stretch on Hawksbay Road (also marked as Mubarak Village Road on some maps) is a two-lane road that runs along a rocky coastal plain. The road condition is generally acceptable but potholes appear after the monsoon season — drive at moderate speed. Google Maps and Apple Maps both navigate this route accurately as of 2025. Set your destination to "Hawkes Bay Beach Karachi" rather than just "Hawkes Bay" to avoid confusion with other locations.

Toll Booths and Road Costs

There is currently one toll plaza on the primary route to Hawkes Bay, situated on Hub River Road approximately 8 km before the beach turnoff. The toll for a private car is Rs. 60–80 each way (cash only at the booth; keep small notes). Motorcycles pay Rs. 20–30. There are occasional additional collection points during peak seasons managed by the local union — these are unofficial but paying Rs. 50–100 avoids delays.

Entry Fee at Hawkes Bay

Entry to the main Hawkes Bay beach area is Rs. 200 per vehicle as of 2025, collected at a gate near the beach hut area. This fee goes to the beach management committee. Parking is included. If you are renting a beach hut (see below), the hut fee typically covers entry as well — confirm when booking.

Beach Huts: Rental Prices and Booking

Beach huts at Hawkes Bay are the best way to spend a full day comfortably. A standard hut provides shade, a seating area, and basic facilities. Prices in 2025:

  • Standard hut (weekday): Rs. 1,500–2,000 for the day
  • Standard hut (weekend/Sunday): Rs. 2,500–3,500
  • Large/premium hut: Rs. 4,000–6,000 on weekends

Most huts are booked via the hut owners who maintain a presence at the gate. Arrive early on Sundays — popular huts fill by 9am. You can also call ahead (numbers are posted on social media groups like "Karachi Beach Lovers" on Facebook) to reserve. Huts closer to the water command a premium.

Horse Riding and Camel Rides

Horse riding is available at Hawkes Bay year-round. Standard prices:

  • Horse ride (short circuit, 10–15 min): Rs. 500–800 per person. Negotiate before mounting — the opening ask is usually Rs. 1,000–1,200.
  • Camel ride (short circuit): Rs. 400–600 per person.
  • Long beach gallop (30 min, experienced riders): Rs. 1,500–2,000 — ask for this specifically if you can ride.

The horses at Hawkes Bay are generally well-maintained compared to other Karachi beaches. Children over 5 years can ride with an adult escort included in the price.

Food and Drink at the Beach

Several food stalls operate along the Hawkes Bay beachfront. Expect:

  • Biryani and karahi stalls: Rs. 250–400 per plate. Quality is variable — the stall nearest the main hut cluster tends to be most reliable.
  • Fresh coconut water: Rs. 80–120 per coconut. Abundant and cold.
  • Roasted corn (bhutta): Rs. 80–150 with masala. A beach staple.
  • Cold drinks and chai: Rs. 50–100 per cup/can.

Bringing your own food is both permitted and common — many families pack full lunches in coolers. There is no rule against it and it saves significant cost on a family outing.

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+): The coastal sun is intense even in winter. Essential from 10am–4pm.
  • Extra change of clothes: You will get wet if you swim. A dry set for the drive home is non-negotiable.
  • Cash: The beach economy is entirely cash-based. ATMs do not exist at the beach — bring enough from the city.
  • Drinking water: Bring at least 2 litres per person. The stall water is fine but overpriced.
  • A tarpaulin or beach mat: Even if you rent a hut, having a mat for the sand is useful.
  • Plastic bags for rubbish: Be a responsible visitor — the beach suffers from littering and carrying out your own rubbish makes a difference.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal Hawkes Bay visit window is October to March. November through February is the sweet spot: temperatures of 20–28°C, low humidity, and a pleasant sea breeze. April starts getting warm; by May it is too hot for comfort. The monsoon season (July–September) brings rough surf and debris to the beach — not recommended for swimming. Winter mornings (arrive by 8am) offer the beach at its most serene before the crowds arrive.

Safety Tips

  • Swimming safety: Hawkes Bay has a relatively gentle shore break but rip currents form in certain spots. Do not swim beyond waist depth if you are not a strong swimmer. Watch children closely — the surf can be deceptive.
  • Groups only: Solo visitors, particularly women, should visit with a group. The beach is family-friendly but remote enough that solo travel is inadvisable.
  • Leave before dark: The road back to Karachi is poorly lit in sections. Plan to leave the beach by 5:30–6pm to arrive home before full dark.
  • Vehicle security: Leave valuables in the car boot rather than visible on seats. The beach area is generally safe but petty theft from cars is reported occasionally.
  • Sea conditions: Check wind conditions — on days with strong onshore wind (common October–November), the surf can be rougher than usual.
