DHA Karachi is the city's most restaurant-dense residential area — a 30-square-kilometre stretch of planned neighbourhoods where the eating options range from legendary old-school desi joints to international-quality fine dining. The challenge is knowing which phase has what. This guide is organised the way DHA residents actually navigate it: by phase, with specific restaurant names, what to order, and realistic price expectations.
DHA Phase 2 — Old Guard Excellence
Phase 2 is where DHA's food culture began, and several institutions here have been running since the 1980s and 90s. The commercial areas around Khayaban-e-Shahbaz and Bukhari Commercial (technically Phase 6 but functionally the Phase 2 hub) are the anchor.
Kababjees
What to order: Seekh kebab platter, Peshwari chicken, naan
Price per person: Rs. 1,200–1,800
Vibe: Family sit-down, casual
Kababjees has been the defining restaurant of DHA Phase 2 since it opened. The seekh kebab — minced mutton spiced with ginger, green chilli, and coriander, grilled over coal — is the benchmark. The Peshwari chicken is sticky-glazed and properly charred. Service is fast and the setting is unpretentious. Reservations needed on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Usmania Restaurant, Phase 2
What to order: Mutton karahi, lamb chops, daal makhani
Price per person: Rs. 900–1,400
Vibe: Old-school desi, no-frills
Usmania is the karahi specialist of Phase 2. The mutton karahi is cooked to order, which means a 15–20 minute wait, but the result — tomato-based, intensely reduced, eaten directly from the wok with a stack of naans — is worth every minute.
DHA Phase 4 — The Sea-View Strip
Phase 4's coastal location gives it a distinct character. The Do Darya waterfront strip is one of Karachi's most celebrated dining destinations, and Phase 4 more broadly is where the city's seafood culture lives.
Do Darya (Seafood Strip)
What to order: Grilled pomfret, prawn karahi, crab masala (seasonal)
Price per person: Rs. 1,500–3,000 depending on seafood selection
Vibe: Outdoor, sea view, festive
Do Darya is not one restaurant but a collection of seafood stalls and restaurants along an open-air waterfront promenade. The pomfret — whole fish grilled over coal and served with a tangy tamarind chutney — is the signature. Come after 8pm when the sea breeze picks up and the crowds thin slightly. The views of the Arabian Sea at night justify the elevated prices.
Kolachi
What to order: Prawn karahi, fish tikka, desi thali
Price per person: Rs. 2,000–3,500
Vibe: Upscale, sea view, occasion dining
Kolachi sits at the premium end of the Phase 4 dining strip — a proper sit-down restaurant with impeccable sea views and a menu that spans seafood, BBQ, and Pakistani classics. The prawn karahi is among the best in the city. Book ahead on weekends.
DHA Phase 5 — Café Culture and Diverse Cuisine
Phase 5's commercial strips — particularly Khayaban-e-Badar and the Tipu Sultan Road corridor — are where Karachi's café culture is most concentrated. This is the phase for brunch, specialty coffee, and internationally-influenced menus.
Xander's
What to order: Creamy pasta, club sandwich, fresh-squeezed juices, any dessert
Price per person: Rs. 1,200–2,000
Vibe: Café, brunch, all-day dining
Xander's has been Karachi's most beloved café for over a decade. The menu is continental-leaning — pastas, sandwiches, grilled items — but executed with quality that matches the price. The desserts, particularly the brownies and cheesecake, are the best in Phase 5. Permanently busy from 12pm–3pm and again from 8pm–midnight. Indoor and outdoor seating.
Café Aylanto
What to order: Chicken parmigiana, truffle pasta, tiramisu
Price per person: Rs. 2,000–3,500
Vibe: Fine casual, date night, business lunches
Aylanto is DHA Phase 5's closest equivalent to a proper European restaurant — a dimly lit interior, attentive service, and a menu that takes Italian-influenced cooking seriously. The truffle pasta is the dish that gets mentioned most. This is a restaurant for occasions rather than everyday dining.
Street Food Stalls, Khayaban-e-Badar
What to order: Gol gappay, chaat, bun kebab
Price per person: Rs. 200–400
Vibe: Evening street food
The evening chaat vendors that set up on Khayaban-e-Badar offer a counterpoint to Phase 5's café culture. The gol gappay here — the round semolina shells filled with spiced chickpeas and tamarind water — are exceptionally good. Come between 7pm and 10pm.
DHA Phase 6 — The New Commercial Core
Phase 6's Bukhari Commercial and Khayaban-e-Ittehad are where the most new restaurant openings in DHA happen. This is the highest-density food zone in the entire area.
Zameer Ansari
What to order: Mutton sajji, chapli kebab, lamb roast platter
Price per person: Rs. 1,800–2,800
Vibe: Upscale Peshawari, wood-fire cooking
Zameer Ansari brought proper sajji — whole-roasted lamb or chicken, wood-fired over hours — to DHA Phase 6 and became an instant institution. The lamb sajji requires pre-ordering (24 hours ahead for whole portions) but the chicken sajji is available walk-in. The chapli kebab is also outstanding. This is big-sharing, bone-on-the-table dining at its best.
The Dhabba
What to order: Dal makhani, butter chicken, garlic naan, kulfi
Price per person: Rs. 1,200–1,800
Vibe: Upscale dhaba aesthetic, families
The Dhabba takes the roadside dhaba aesthetic — bare bulbs, wooden cots, metal thalis — and executes it at a level far above its visual humility. The dal makhani (slow-cooked black lentil with butter) is one of the best versions in Karachi. The kulfi on a stick that comes at the end is non-negotiable.
Nando's and International Chains, Phase 6
Phase 6's Bukhari Commercial strip also hosts the strongest concentration of international chains in DHA: Nando's, McDonald's, KFC, and several regional chains. For families with children or those wanting familiar international options, this strip is the most practical choice.
DHA Phase 7 — Emerging Scene
Phase 7 is the newest established phase and its food scene is developing rapidly. Khayaban-e-Qasim has several new openings worth knowing about.
Burning Brownie Café
What to order: Loaded hot brownies, waffles, specialty lattes
Price per person: Rs. 900–1,400
Vibe: Dessert-first café, Instagram-friendly
Burning Brownie is Phase 7's most popular café, drawing DHA-wide crowds for its molten brownie combinations. The brownie loaded with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel is the flagship item. Waits of 20–30 minutes on Friday evenings are standard.
Sichuan House
What to order: Mapo tofu, dumplings, Sichuan hot pot (call ahead for hot pot nights)
Price per person: Rs. 1,500–2,500
Vibe: Authentic Chinese, quieter, neighbourhood
Phase 7's best-kept secret is this authentic Sichuan restaurant that does not pander to Karachi's taste preferences — the mapo tofu is genuinely numbing-spicy in the proper Sichuan style. Popular with the Chinese business community resident in nearby areas and adventurous local diners.
DHA Phase 8 — Family Food Courts and New Openings
Phase 8 is the most residential phase and dining options are clustered around the main commercial blocks near Khayaban-e-Amin. The area has seen the most new restaurant openings since 2022.
Crust Pizza and Grill
What to order: Wood-fired margarita, chicken BBQ pizza, garlic bread
Price per person: Rs. 1,000–1,600
Vibe: Casual family, fast-ish
For Phase 8 residents, Crust is the most reliable family pizza option. The wood-fired oven produces a properly blistered base and the toppings use quality ingredients without the price premium of DHA Phase 5 Italian restaurants.
Biryani of the Seas, Phase 8 branch
What to order: Prawn biryani, mutton dum biryani
Price per person: Rs. 650–850
Vibe: Premium biryani, family
The Phase 8 branch of Biryani of the Seas serves the same excellent seafood biryani as the Phase 5 original, now accessible for the city's fastest-growing DHA phase. Delivery available to Phases 7 and 8.
